INFLATABLE CONSTRUCTION

WHICH SUP BOARD FOR WHICH PURPOSE?

There are different SUP boards for different requirements and areas of application. The wider and thicker the shape, the more volume buoyancy the SUP has. A high volume means that the SUP is easier to balance and therefore easier to ride. Because of the higher resistance with more volume, it is more strenuous to paddle to reach higher speeds. The SUP boards are divided into the following categories: Wave boards, these are boards with which you can ride waves - on the river or the sea. They are short and easy to turn and therefore difficult to drive for beginners. They are not particularly suitable for long tours on rivers and lakes.

ALL-ROUND / TOURING SUP BOARD

These all-round sup boards are suitable for sup tours on rivers and lakes, but can also be used in small waves on the coast. They are longer than waveboards and their wide and thick shape makes them easier to control. These sup boards are comfortable to ride and a good choice for beginners, families and advanced riders. Those who like to go on Sup tours should make sure that the Sup Board is equipped with a luggage net. Classic epoxy on a foam core is usually used as the material for the hard boards. When it comes to inflatable SUP boards, drop-stitch PVC, which is manufactured using the drop-stitch technology, is one of the best materials for inflatable shapes. 

RACE-SUP BOARD

Raceboards are mostly performance-oriented boards with a relatively long, narrow shape. This allows high speeds to be achieved, but this makes them more difficult to balance, especially in choppy water. Therefore, they are not particularly suitable for not highly motivated, sporty beginners. They are manufactured as hard boards either from epoxy or, for the high-end sector, from carbon. Inflatable boards have meanwhile also established themselves among the race boards. 

WHITEWATER SUP BOARD

In white water you need particularly stable sup boards. Models made of PE (polyethylene) are well suited for this area of application. They have an increased volume on the sides, which increases the insensitivity to side water and the stability against tipping. Inflatables (inflatable) are also often used in white water. They are robust enough and have a shock-absorbing effect due to their flexibility. 

SUP BOARD SELECTION AIDS

The length, width and volume of the SUP board depends on the area of application, the user characteristics (beginner, advanced or professional) and the weight of the rider. A general recommendation cannot therefore be made. Common board sizes are:

9'6 ″ = approx. 292 cm for advanced and professionals with ice in the wave

10'0 ″ to 11 ′ = approx. 304 cm to 335 cm (all-round and touring boards) for beginners, families and advanced riders

12'6 ″ = approx. 384 cm (the most common size for race boards) for athletic, experienced beginners, advanced and professionals 14 ′ = approx. 427 cm (race boards) Sporty experienced drivers who want speed (length runs)

VOLUME OF THE SUP BOARD

In order to be able to roughly calculate the required volume for the respective application, one must first calculate the buoyancy. This results from the weight of the board and the weight of the rider. With a weight of the rider of 80 kg and a weight of the board of 15 kg, the buoyancy is 95 liters.

WAVE SUP BOARD

With a weight of approx. 9-14 kg, wave boards have a volume of approx. 90-240 liters. In order to have a more easy-turning board in the wave, you need less volume with these boards. Skiers who need less volume to master the board, add around 20-50% to the buoyancy to determine the required volume. Example: Buoyancy = rider weight 80 kg + board weight 15 kg + 50% = 143 liters board volume. Less experienced people add about 50-100% to the buoyancy

ALL-ROUND SUP BOARD

With a weight of 12-20kg, all-round boards have a volume of approx. 130-300 liters. Beginners should add about 130-150% to the calculated buoyancy in order to get the right sup board volume for them. Advanced riders who want to use their Sup Board not only for touring but also for the wave, add about 80-90% to the buoyancy.

RACE SUP BOARD

With a weight of 15-20kg, Race Sup boards have the highest volume with 200-300 liters. However, that does not mean that they are easier to drive because of the high volume. Due to their narrow design, they are not so stable and are more difficult to turn. Depending on your ability, you add 100-200% to the buoyancy in order to obtain the required board volume.
